Dhirubhai Ambaani

Dhirubhai Ambani: A Visionary Beyond His Time

December 30 marks the birth anniversary of Shri Dhirubhai Ambani, a name synonymous with turning dreams into empires. More than a businessman, he was a trailblazer who redefined what it means to dream, innovate, and build big in India.

Dhirubhai revolutionized Indian industry and capital markets, empowering the aam aadmi to participate in wealth creation through equity ownership. By demystifying the stock market for millions, he transformed Reliance Industries into a household name and a symbol of opportunity and trust.

He was a man far ahead of his time—envisioning large-scale projects, navigating complexities, and crafting products that became staples in Indian homes. The Jamnagar Refinery, one of the world’s largest, stands as a monumental testament to his unmatched foresight and ambition.

Dhirubhai’s fearless leadership was legendary. “Take decisions boldly,” he often said, “Mistakes happen only when you take action.” His unwavering belief in his team encouraged them to innovate, take risks, and learn from every setback.

I had the privilege of meeting him personally during the inauguration of the Jamnagar Refinery. His energy was magnetic, his vision inspiring. A brief interaction with him could fill you with optimism and drive, leaving an indelible mark on your spirit.

My days with Reliance were transformative, each moment filled with learning opportunities. Mukesh Bhai, his son, often fondly remembered Dhirubhai’s dream to empower India, sharing stories of his father’s unwavering commitment to nation-building.

Dhirubhai Ambani wasn’t just the architect of Reliance Industries—he was the architect of modern industrial India. His contributions to our nation’s growth and prosperity deserve the highest honor, including the Bharat Ratna.

As we celebrate his legacy, let us remember him not just for his achievements but also for the hope and courage he inspired in

us to dream big and act boldly.

Ratan Tata

 I Came Upon a Lighthouse

This heartfelt memoir, I Came Upon a Lighthouse, written by Shantanu Naidu, offers an intimate glimpse into the life and compassionate nature of Mr. Ratan Tata, one of India’s most respected industrialists.

The book recounts how a young man from a humble background, Shantanu, found an unlikely mentor in Ratan Tata. Shantanu first approached Mr. Tata with a unique proposal to reduce road accidents involving stray dogs. His passion and dedication to animal welfare left a lasting impression on Tata, who, deeply moved by his cause, welcomed Shantanu into his circle.

Despite their close bond, Tata never treated Shantanu as someone entitled to special privileges. Instead, he treated him with warmth and respect, like a friend, a brother, or even a son—while maintaining a strong sense of boundaries. Their relationship was built on genuine care and mutual respect, and Tata often showed his affection by attending Shantanu’s graduation ceremony at Cornell University, enjoying home-cooked meals made by his mother, accompanying him to the salon, and even vacationing together.

The book is a moving tribute to the remarkable generosity of Ratan Tata, showcasing his deep emotional intelligence and the humanity that defines him. I Came Upon a Lighthouse is a touching and inspiring read, perfect for a single sitting

Bhopal : A Stark Contrast

 Bhopal: A Stark Contrast

A city’s railway station reflects its culture, discipline, and people's warmth. It offers a glimpse into local habits and leaves a lasting impression.

Despite remarkable improvements in Indian Railways since the advent of the #ModiGovernment, my recent journey from Indore to Bhopal on the #VandeBharatExpress revealed a concerning exception.

On arriving at Bhopal, I was struck by a stark contrast. The privately managed Rani Kamlapati Station, overseen by the Bansal Group, is a beacon of modernity. With airport-like facilities and world-class amenities, it showcases what a futuristic railway station should be.

However, the old Bhopal Railway Station, a legacy of the British era, tells a different story. Neglected and decaying, it feels more like a dumping ground than a functional station. The lack of maintenance, garbage-strewn surroundings, and a sinking atmosphere are disheartening—especially for the capital of Madhya Pradesh.

This neglect raises serious concerns, particularly as #MadhyaPradesh has been under #BJP rule for over a decade. The contrast also undermines the vision of #SwachhBharat, which is championed by #PMModi. How can the main station of a state capital reflect such disregard for basic cleanliness and functionality?

The proverb “First impressions are the last impressions” comes to mind. How can #Investors be expected to trust a region when even its gateways are neglected? Infrastructure speaks volumes about governance and the state of the

old Bhopal Railway Station is a blot on the city’s image.

It’s time for accountability. I urge the concerned authorities to take immediate action:

  • @PMOIndia #PMOIndia
  • @RailMinIndia #RailMinIndia
  • @AshwiniVaishnaw (Railway Minister) #AshwiniVaishnaw
  • @CMOfficeMP (Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh) #CMOfficeMP
  • Divisional Railway Manager, Bhopal #DivisionalRailwayManagerBhopal

Bhopal deserves better, and so does India. A clean and welcoming station is not just a convenience—it’s a reflection of our collective pride and progress. Let us ensure that this glaring disparity is addressed and transformed into a success story of urban renewal.

RANGO KA TYOHAR, HOLI

"THANDO CHALE BAYRO YA FAGAN KI RUT PYARIJI,
DEKH JHAROKHO BOLE SHIVJI BAT NIHAREJI,
KE MAHINO FAGAN RO....WAH..WAH MAHINO FAGAN RO
AA...RANG RANGILI HOLI AHI RE...KE MAHINO FAGAN RO.

Wishing my all readers a very colourful, joyful, smiling and romantic holi.

I am writing these notes after quite a long time. Infact recession has taken toll of many's mind creativity. Today I buckled up and thought to pen this again.

Early morning of this season is just fantastic. Our joys knows no bounds when I alongwith Behnji go for a walk at 6 o clock. Infact how I wish I had the wings to fly and enjoy the serenity and beauty of nature. Of course, since behanji is always besides me, so I get the double dose of pleasure (or in hindi "Anand").

We had some tragic incident in the month of Dec. 08. My brother in law Sh Navneet Bhandari went to heavenly abode untimely. And as such the atmoshphere in the family was yet to reconcile this hard truth. Thought personally I tried my best to give best of my support to Behanji, but time will only be great healer.

We conducted Rajasthani Art and Craft Festiveal in the second week of Feb. 09. It was really great Mela of 8 days conducted by Rajastjan Parishad of Chandigarh in association with government of Rajasthan. The artisans from Rajasthan did frisk business to the tune of around Rs. 5 crore. The evenings were given additional flavour Rajasthan Dance and Music which was partly anchored by me. Special Rajasthani food was served both the times at very reasonable rates to all the visitors. The average daily visitors were around 3000. Many high dignatories and film celebrities also visited without pre intimation and invitation.

Today we celebrated holi in our society. While kids enjoyed playing in colours and waters from morning to afternoon, we the elders paid visit from door to door to all members of the society and applied "gulal" and wished everybody for a wonderful and sparkling holi. This was followed by drinks and dine.

Teej Festival of Rajasthan

On board Shatabdi Express 9.8.2010, 9 am.

Teej Festival Rajasthan Parishad

Teej is one of the most widely celebrated festivals of Rajasthan. Swings, traditional songs and dancing are the unique features of Teej celebrations in Rajasthan. Women perform traditional folk dance dressed in green colored clothes and sing beautiful Teej songs while enjoying their sway on swings bedecked with flowers.

Teej is celebrated with immense fun and fanfare in most of the towns of Rajasthan. On this day, women and young girls wear their best clothes and adorn themselves with fine jewelry. They gather at a nearby temple or a common place and offers prayers to Goddess Parvati for well-being of their husband.

On the occasion of Teej, markets in Jaipur are stocked with trendiest women accessories and clothes. Most of the fabric clothes display laheria (tie and dye) prints. Sweet shops keep different Teej sweets but ghewar is the main sweet of the season. At some shops malpuas are also prepared in great quantities.

All over Rajasthan, swings are hung from trees and decorated with fragrant flowers. Women both married and unmarried love to swing on these swings to celebrate the 'sawan Festival'.

Teej procession of Jaipur not just attracts visitors from India but also lures a large number of international tourists. High point of Teej procession is the magnificently decorated idol of Goddess Parvati which is kept on a palanquin and carried through the Pink City of Jaipur.

Thousands of devotees throng the procession which is carried out for two consecutive days. Antique gilt palanquins, bullock carts pulling cannons, chariots, caparisoned elephants, camels, bands, and dance groups form a part of the grand Teej procession. The palanquin of Goddess Parvati is carried by eight men dressed in red color. Teej procession is a very huge affair which moves through various places in Jaipur. Lot of Teej songs are sung when the procession moves further. Folk artists and performers enchant the crowd with their splendid performance. Some people even dress up like Gods and Goddesses and play various musical instruments. Teej prasad is distributed among the crowd of devotees.

Tej Festival was celebrated at Rajasthan Parishad Bhawan in our city with great pomp and show followed by dinner on 8th August, 2010.

In our City this Festival was celebrated on 8th August, 2010. We have around 500 families from Rajasthan and generally participation is very good.

This time, there was gathering of around 350 people. We had around 12 items in the cultural evening. WE generally encourage group participation, therefore, in most of the progrmmes people from all age group do participate and try to make the evening memorable with their best of performances with lots of hard work in the back ground.

As usual Arpit enthralled audience with his inimical style of Comedy. This time he chose to cracks jokes on different topics instead of single line subject.

Beenuji also prompted me to perform with her on stage and she choreographed Rajsthani Dance for both of us on song “Moriya Acchho bolio re adhhi rat ro”. The dance was an instant hit and everybody in the audience was dancing with us. I personally feel that anything done with passion and involvement gives you great satisfaction. Beenu is otherwise also known for dancing, but to make me dance like her was a great effort by her. She also made it sure that “make up is done by herself” only.

The occasion was cheered with prize distribution and ended with great recipe of food.

A few snaps.

Navratra in Ahmedabad

My experience: A navratra night in Ahmedabad

Gujarat never sleeps during Navratri. What a festival it is?

A strong desire to see this unique tradition of Gujarat, I along with partner Ms Beenu flown in to Ahmedabad.

Draped in colourful costumes women folks in Ghagra Cholis and man in pyjama Kurta all set to dance together.

The tone of Gujarati Folk music  set on. And the legs started shaking. And as  the time passes the beating of drums become more loud and the gharba catches speed.

Then after two hours of  intense dance, now it’s turn of “Nashta” and each and everyone is served Jalebi, Fafda, papita Sambhra  and hot tea. The beauty of this programme is that residents sponsor turn by turn. No compulsion.

Wait for 30 minutes and then its turn of Dandia. The beat of Dandia with its melodious synchronisation compel you to play with each member of the group. What a inspiring dance it is!!!

Now it is 1 am and Sandio is going on.  Nobody is yet tired and beauty with mesmerising scentic atmosphere the night has become memorable for ever.

Thailand : Retail market

The geographical heart of Southeast Asia, the Kingdom of Thailand is more than a pulsating, vibrant tourist destination – it is one of the biggest economies in the region. Heavily export-oriented, Thailand, or the Land of Smiles as it is popularly known, is recognized for the openness of its economy, and willingness to accept foreign direct investment. The recent agitation by Red Shirt was also successfully thwarted.

Thailand today is the world’s largest rice exporter, the second-largest tungsten producer and third-largest tin producer. Having made significant progress in social and economic development in recent years. The current growth rate is around 8% p.a. Unlike its other neighbours in Southeast Asia such as Laos, Vietnam, or Burma, Thailand was never colonized – and the country’s developing, free-enterprise economy is slowly shifting from agriculture to manufacturing.

Thailand, known as Siam until 1939, has been inhabited for around 5,000 years with the earliest civilization believed to be that of the Mons in central Siam, although the first Siam state is the Theravada Buddhist kingdom of Sukohthai.

The land of Theravada Buddhism has had a long tradition of being one of Asia’s most culturally vibrant countries. With miles of extended coastline, Thailand has some of the world’s best beaches, ancient architecture, friendly people and unique cuisine.

The Thai traditional greeting, the wai, involves pressing the fingers and palms together at chest level while slightly bowing the head. The wai is always returned, and performs the twin functions of greeting and showing respect.

My previous posting was mainly focussed on our site visits to various interesting places of tourists destination. Please do visit.. http://mastpradeep.blogspot.com/2010/09/thailand-trip.html.

This trip was meant to be a business trip. Therefore, we were more interested to know about the retail business in Thailand and Bangkok in particular. A team of 20 Real Estate Managers of Reliance visited Bangkok from 3rd March, 2011 to 6th March, 2011. The extensive tour of retail market was undertaken and atleast 20 big properties consisting of super market, departmental stores, speciality stores and hyper mart were studied and tried to find out the reasons for success of retail business in Bangkok. A few questions were framed in mind and tried to find out the answers.

Why Hyper as a format has been successful in Thailand:

i) Meet local aspiration
ii) Both spouse are working : Easy to shop at one go.
iii) Strategically located
iv) USP : Fresh is actually fresh both Vegetarian and non-Vegetarian
v) Ready to cook and ready to serve
vi) Price points : competitive and affordable
vii) Quality assurance
viii) Quick Service
ix) Food court and impulse buy on GF : Major driver
x) Robust logistics

What are the basic principles which retailers have followed while selecting the location?

1. Catchment
i) Normally targeted densely populated areas
ii) Middle and high income group
iii) Lot of disposable income

2. Competition

i) Best location to beat the competition
ii) If Competition came : up gradation of existing set up : Rama 4, Carrefour store
iii) Merger with Strong departmental store : Big C + Future Store (Ringshit)
iv) Positioning : Lotus Tesco : Value proposition, Carrefour : Upper middle class

3. Road width

i) Normally located on wide road more i.e. more than 100 feet
ii) Little compromise - Easy access, maneuverability

4. Infrastructure
i) Water and power availability
ii) Robust government sensitivity
iii) Flyovers, twist and turns, service roads and access : Bad planning leads to accident
iv) Strong visibility of access road

5. Transport facility
i) Efficient public transport system

6. Parking :
i) Surface parking : important
ii) Front parking : convenient
iii) 70% of covered space on ground floor for stilt

7. Town Growth pattern
i) Location can be planned where town is likely to grow in next 5/6 years

8. Merchandise offering :
i) Meeting taste of local residents
ii) Some are positioned catering to needs to expats :

9. Internal ambience : lighting, washrooms, ile, open spaces
i) Carrefour : Long heights, Fabre Sheets, Tubelights : giving better ambience
ii) Tesco : Yellow lights : Giving night feeling
iii) Lot of open space and wide isle : easy movement
iv) Washrooms are decently maintained

10. Model: Concessionaire
i) Sub leasing and Concessionaries model is very popular
ii) Percentage varying from 30 to 50%
iii) Good balancing between revenue and rentals

11. Size of store

i) Normally two levels each floor of around 1 lac sqft
ii) GF partly used for parking 70%., 30% for food and impulse buying
iii) FSI is not an issue

12. Cost of Occupancy
i) Abundant land is available
ii) Rentals are not very high per sqft of FSI

How Thailand principles are valid for India?

Not applicable to the extent:

i) Social fabric different
ii) Price sensitivity
iii) Services : Home delivery, returns, credit,
iv) Infrastructure : Semi developed in India
v) Disposable Income less
vi) Public Transport not very good
vii) Land prices are extremely high

But : Valid reasons and expectations:

i) GDP growing at 9% with the result disposable income will rise
ii) Lot of emphasis on infrastructure development
iii) Lot of emphasis on female education therefore increasing women working group in urban areas
iv) Quality and quick delivery expectations
v) Access to global merchandise and market
vi) Big size malls : Better to be located on outskirt : wide roads, easy access, low on rentals

Learning as Team Building:

i) Everybody travelled in the same class
ii) Everybody stayed in same Hotel
iii) Everybody travelled in group during city tour
iv) Breakfast invitation personally by boss in his room to each and everybody
v) Asking everybody to use phone of boss to contact family on everyday basis
vi) Taking care of everybody including their luggage by boss
vii) Taking gifts for their juniors back in India
viii) Taking lunch and dinner together and taking care of everybody’s taste

Learning on Cost Saving:

i) Travel in group, low cost carrier, no alcohol,
ii) Use of Sundays and working days properly.

Silver Jubilee (Marriage Anniverssary)

21st November is the day when I married with Beenu, a sweet girl from Jodhpur.  We really don’t know how 25 years have passed living together and it seems as if it was yesterday only when we got married.

We didn’t have any formal plan to celebrate this day in 2015 when we crossed 25 years as we were going to Jodhpur in any case to participate in a family marriage.

However, our kids Arpit and Kshitij wanted us to be present in Jodhpur on 20th November, 2015 and got our tickets advanced and we reached Jodhpur early morning of 20th.  At around 7 pm our kids asked invited us to a Hotel called “Tamarind”.

When we reached Hotel, we were taken aback to see galaxy of people sitting in the hall waiting for three couples viz ourseves, Ashok-Ashaji, Mahendrasa-Induji (brothers and bhabhis) who were married on 19th and 20th November 1990 respectively.   Then only we realised that children of three couples worked day and night for last six months to arrange this programme for us sitting at different parts of India.

Programme started with welcome note by Arpit and garlanding to our departed parents and a word of blessing by my eldest brother Shri PC Kumbhat.

A Marwari dance was immediately followed as a mark of respect to my mother who had strong fascination for folk dances of Rajasthan.  Three Anniversary brides were honoured with Mehndi by their sisters in laws.

All the three couples were honoured by their respective children with bouquets and garlanding.  Charmi, Chinki ,Arpit and most lovely Kshitij recited poems written by themselves for their parents along with ppt presentation of their photographs based on important occasions of life.  The level of poetry was par excellence. And a formal Cake Cutting ceremony followed.

To keep the audience engaged, Arpit gave a ppt presentation of psychology, “The difference between Theory and Practical” from perspective of couples.  The main theme was “Nok Jhok” to depict how the couples behave within their home and publicly.  Why and how they fight in the home and how they reflect in public??  The questions were asked to audience on their behaviour pattern with lot of humour added to it.  This programme acted as stop gap arrangement between other interesting programmes.

All the couples were asked to share their experiences and reasons for “Nok Jhonk”.  Bhabhiji, Sumit, Renu and Beenu made the evening full of laughter by their mimicry show of all three couples.   Charmi and Anshu enthralled the audience with their classy dance on old hindi songs.

A few words of blessings and life history were given by my father in law Shri Gulab Singh Sab Bhandari and mother in law Mrs. Shanta Bhandari, Mrs. Duggar (Mother of my Bhabhi Induji) and Mr Mohan Singh Sab Bhandari (father in law of my brother Ashok). Brother and Bhabhi of my bhabhi Ashaji also became emotional and recited poetry.

A dance sequel by Kshitij, Charmi and Chinki (Nupur) made audience to dance on their feet.

The unique feature  of the programme was that poem written by Arpit was framed beautifully and 10 copies were exchanged between the family members by saying that each other is thankful to God by taking birth in the TRK family.

The formal gifts giving ceremony took place at the end and followed by dinner.  Everybody had no words to appreciate the efforts of the children who were working so seamlessly, but secretly to organise the event.  So much so that they contributed from their savings to finance the event.

We are very proud of you children: Chinki, Charmi, Anshu, Akshu, Arpit, Kshitij…Well done.

Poem by Nupur Kumbhat
